Public Meeting on Wind Turbine Project to Air on Medford TV3
A video recording of the Septebmer 20th public meeting on the Medford Energy Independence wind turbine project will air on Medford TV3 on Friday, October 12th at 10:30 A.M. The meeting includes presentations by Mayor Michael J. McGlynn, Director of the Energy and Environment Office Patricia Barry, MCEC co-chair Fred Schlicher and Kevin Shulte of Sustainable Energy Developments, Inc., the project consultants. City
Awarded Wind Turbine Grant for Small Wind Turbine
The
City of Medford has been awarded a $250,000 grant from the Massachusetts
Technology Collaborative for the design and construction
of a small 100 kilowatt wind turbine at the McGlynn Elementary/Middle
School. The turbine will supply up to 10% of the school's
energy needs saving about $25,000 a year in electricity costs
and offsetting about 76 tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

Medford
Joins EPA New England Community Energy Challenge
Medford
was the first municipality to sign on to a new EPA program
designed to help cities and towns reduce energy use and promote
renewable energy. Under the challenge, the City commits to
benchmarking energy use in all municipal buildings, promote
energy efficiency and renewables to the community, and reduce

of Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth Corps Presents at City
Hall
Medford
celebrated Earth Day with a global warming presentation by
Wilson Rickerson, a Boston-based renewable energy consultant
and member of Al Gore's group of trained global warming presenters.
The
45-minute slideshow discussed the science behind global warming
and steps to reducing carbon dioxide emissions. More
than 70 people attended and took home CFL bulbs to help save

A
WBZ TV Boston weather story highlighted some of Medford's
renewable energy projects in a segment on local grassroots
efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The story included
shots of solar panels at City Hall and Hormel stadium, comments

Seeks Grant for Wind Turbine
The
Medford Clean Energy Committee and Energy & Environment
Office have applied to the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative
(MTC) for funding to help build a 100-kilowatt wind turbine
near the McGlynn Middle School. The "Medford Energy Independence
Project" would offset up to 10% of the energy used to
power the McGlynn School, and provide a great educational
resource for Medford students. It would also showcase Medford's
leadership in addressing the impacts of climate change through

Considers Wind Power
The
Medford Clean Energy Committee has begun studying the feasibility
of a wind turbine by installing a weather station at Hormel
Stadium. The device monitors wind speed, providing data that
will help determine if the site is appropriate for a wind
turbine that would provide clean power for the McGlynn and/or

City's
Environmental Agent Participates in Renewable Energy Study
Tour
In
December of 2006 the City's Environmental Agent Patricia Barry
participated in a Renewable Energy Study Tour in Germany organized
by CDS International, Inc. (CDS) and InWEnt GmbH. During the
study tour, Ms Barry met her counterparts in Germany to discuss
the drivers and impacts of Germany's commitment to wind power,
solar power, and biofuels. The study tour included a preparatory
workshop in Washington, DC that featured US and German experts
on renewable energy markets and policies. She learned about
the US program and what types of things need to be accomplished
here in the US to achieve similar renewable energy successes
as those achieved in Germany.
MCEC
Installs Weather Station at Hormel Stadium
A newly installed anemometer monitors wind speed and gathers
other weather data for a wind energy assessment. MCEC co-chair
Bob Paine donated the device and the City's building and fire
departments assisted with installing it atop one of the Hormel
lighting towers. Data from the station is uploaded to weatherunderground.com
and can be accessed in real time. Read
